Blog Questions for Week 5-Case Study: China

Please respond to one of the following questions in your blog post for this week (due Friday, July 5th by 5pm).  Your blog post should be on this page (our class website), and should be at least 250 words long.  Also, you do need to include at least one direct quote from one of the readings for this week (O’Neil ch. 7, Harvey ch. 5, Chiang “Exhalation”).  Please let me know if you have any questions. Also, don’t forget to comment on a classmate’s post from last week or respond to a comment on your post from last week.

1.  China and the Communist ideal: What aspects of the communist ideal do you see in China?  What aspects of China diverge from the Communist ideal?  You can draw from any of the excerpts in the Ball reading from last week for your “Communist ideal” (Marx, Lenin, More, etc.).

2.  China and the US or UK: What similarities do you see in the institutions and societies of China and either the US or the UK?  What differences?  (compare and contrast China with either the US or UK)

3.  In Ted Chiang’s “Exhalation” the narrator/protagonist worries abou the “fatal equilibrium” (752) that will occur when the air pressure evens out between the reservoir and the surface of his world.  How do you see the idea of a “fatal equilibrium” relating to politics, and particularly to an ideal communist society?  Do you think that a truly egalitarian society would flourish or become stagnant?
